BART A2 and B2 car Reference Pics:
A guided, virtual tour of the different parts of the BART Legacy Fleet
Like conventional railroads, the front of the car has an inital. In this case, it is "Y" ("Y end" = front). The opposite end of the car is called the "X end."

Exterior - Roof
The roof of the A/B cars was quite interesting. It was originally a large sheet of aluminum, with a radio antenna mounted towards the Y end. In the 1990s, roof numbers and yard assignments (C, R, D, H) were used to ID cars from above. The midlife rehab resulted in new car numbers and extensive roof repair work. By the 2010s, each car had a unique roof condition. Some had more patches (doublers) than others, while others were in better condition.
