E Cars
Car No: 4001-4819
Built: 2016-Present (Bombardier/Alstom)
In Service: 2018-Present

Picture
E cars are similar in function to B cars. E cars are used in the middle of trains ("cattle cars"). They do not have automatic controls for revenue operation, and rely on a lead and trailing units (D cars) for their operation in revenue service. They can run under manual control as single or multiple units in yards.

Onboarding Dates:
All numbers are very rough estimates, given various gaps in car onboarding process. There are overlaps.

Notable Cars

4465 - Final E car of original contract/order. Assigned to Hayward Test Track.

4466-4467 (2024)

Not quite sure what contract these cars were under. BART documentation somewhat conflicts with other BART documentation.

Possibly:
-Replacements for crashed/damaged cars?
-Actually under Core Capacity Program contract?
-Penalty due to reliability problems early on with the fleet?

4468-4499 (2024) - Core Capacity Program

The expansion orders include hundreds more Fleet of the Future cars (306 cars for Core Capacity - 30 trains per hour in Transbay Tube using CBTC). These cars round off the 4400s.

The first few dozen of these cars were already under construction as of July 2024. The first of these cars entered service by October 2024.

4500-4599 (2024-2025) - Core Capacity Program

The 4500s are part of the Core Capacity expansion order of cars. The first of these cars entered service by November 2024, and deliveries and onboarding continued through March 2025.

4600-4699 (2025) - Core Capacity Program

The 4600s are part of the Core Capacity expansion order of cars. The first of these cars were delivered in March 2025, and the first of these entered service by April 2025.

The first 4600 I have seen in service was 4604 on a Yellow Line train on 4/7/25.

HTT Log:
4600s - Late March 2025
4610s - April 2025
4620s - May 2025
4630s - May to June 2025
4650s - mid-June 2025
4660s - mid-June 2025
4670s - June 2025
4680s - July 2025
4690s - July-August 2025

Notable Cars
4690 - 1000th FOTF car, with the carbody made in Mexico in May 2025, final assembly in Plattsburg through July 2025, and Hayward Test Track testing July-August 2025.

4700-4773 (2025+) - Core Capacity Program

Most 4700s are part of the Core Capacity expansion order of cars.

As of January 2026, it appears the District has paused the delivery/acceptance of new cars, around car 4760.
BART has 1070 D and E cars (310 D, 760 E), compared to the former 669 legacy car fleet. This large fleet has stressed the capacity of the system to store these car. Additionally, these new cars were delivered far ahead of their true need (specifically these 306 add-on cars), which assumed a need for x30 10 car trains per hour through the Transbay Tube.

BART currently runs a maximum of 15 trains per hour through the tube, of which all are 6 to 9 cars long (less than half of the 300 cars per hour calculation). According to my calculations, BART has the lowest fleet utilization of all large (>250 car fleet) rapid transit systems in the United States, hovering at about 50% of the fleet needed for peak service, due to low ridership recovery as compared to large eastern systems.

HTT Log:
4700s - Late 8/2025. Entered revenue service by 9/2/25.
4710s - 9/2025, entered service starting in 9/2025
4730s - First entered service by late October 2025
4760 - Entered service late 2025/Jan 2026. Last car of the 760 E car fleet as of January 2026.

4774-4819 (TBD) - BART to Santa Clara Extention Cars

The expansion orders include hundreds more Fleet of the Future cars - 48 cars for BART downtown San Jose and Santa Clara extention.
